Dr. Stewart joined a group of fourth year medical students and resident physicians from all across the country. She says, “Making positive changes from the current health paradigm requires one of our greatest principles- docere. Docere not only involves the doctor and patient relationship, but also extends to doctors as educators throughout our evolving healthcare system.

Remembering Dr. Stacey Ann Austin

Stacey Ann Austin lost her long and courageous battle with brain cancer on August 19, 2011. Her transition was comfortable and pain-free, with close friends, husband and family at her side. She had faced her challenges since November 2008 with uncommon courage, grace, optimism, and strength. Stacey was born in McAllen, Texas, on Oct. 8, 1962, to Richard Austin III and Jane Austin.

Stacey is survived by: her husband, Richard Mahler; her mother, Jane Austin O'Neill; stepfather, James Richard O'Neill; sister Kelley Austin; aunts Ann Stewart, Jean Miller, Shelley Jordan and Sarallen Sandy; and many cousins and friends.

From March 2007 through October 2008, Stacey was a naturopathic doctor in private practice in Silver City, New Mexico, as well as an occupational therapist and yoga instructor for Gila Regional Medical Center. For many of the past 20 years she worked both as an occupational therapist and yoga teacher in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and California. Stacey also was an avid volunteer for community events and organizations, donating her skills, energy, and talent to many nonprofit groups.

Stacey graduated in 1985 from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University in 1989. In 2005, she received her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from SCNM.

Stacey had a quick and inquiring mind, passion for the healing arts, brilliant intelligence, intense love of nature, and great loyalty to her family, friends, and colleagues. She loved to travel, read, bicycle, dance, jog, work in her garden, and explore basic questions about health, spirituality, and philosophy. Stacey's body may be gone, but her bright light will shine in our hearts forever.

Donations also may be made in her honor to the El Refugio women's crisis center (800 S. Robert, Silver City, NM 88061) or Western New Mexico University School of Occupational Therapy.

SCNM Grad Dr. Marianna Fisher Opens Luxury Juice Fasting Retreat Center

Dr. Marianna Fisher, formerly of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, AZ, is pleased to announce the opening of her new juice fasting retreat center in Sedona, AZ. Dr. Fisher has long been committed to the fundamental art and science of healing with food. Her approach can be summed up in the words of Paracelsus, "The art of healing comes from nature, not from the physician. Therefore, the physician must start from nature, with an open mind." Dr. Fisher implicitly trusts the Vis Medicatrix Naturae and the body’s innate ability to heal. "We are born to heal, and we are also born to eat. The ability of the body to heal itself is intimately connected to the foods we eat. And the foods we eat come from nature. Clearly, the connection between food and health is a primary part of the inherent design".

Dr. Fisher believes that, collectively, we have forgotten our tribal nature, the origins of communal eating as well as our connection to Mother Earth – the very source of our sustenance. "It’s quite possible that we’re eating ourselves to death. It’s time to recognize that what we do to the Earth, we do to ourselves. A truly holistic approach must include caretaking this planet as well." It is her goal to revolutionize the meaning and context of holistic healing. "To me, holistic health is about healing the Whole of our existence. "Heal" is an action verb and holistic healing requires each of us to take personal responsibility, not only for our own health and well being, but also for the healing of this planet. Holistic healing must first truly integrate body, mind and spirit. Juice fasting is a powerful methods for healing hearts, cleansing minds and expanding awareness. As we heal our bodies, we heal our minds. As we heal our minds, we heal our souls. And as our souls heal, we develop spiritual insights, including a profound understanding of life’s interdependent nature. In turn, this expanded awareness leads to a sense of compassion and concern for the well-being of others along with a deep desire to heal the planet. We begin to realize that to fully heal ourselves, we must strive to heal the Whole."

Dr. Fisher emphasizes the importance of food as the foundation for holistic healing by linking Earth to food, food to people, people to each other and all of us back to Earth again in a vast, multi-dimensional, yet unified web that strives toward holistic balance, harmony and wellbeing. She encourages her clients to embrace and heal the Whole through their daily food choices. She underscores her belief that, "If we change the way we eat, we can change the world". Take the first step towards holistic healing by joining Dr. Marianna Fisher’s first juice fasting retreat November 4th-13th in Sedona. Please view her website at www.luxuryjuicefast.com for more information.

Owners of Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine Center (www.aimcenteraz.com), Dr. Toni Vaughan and Dr. Julie Gorman, recently graduated from the APS Academy for the Advancement of Small, Minority- and Women-Owned Enterprises (AAAME). AAAME is a two-year business mentoring program which combines business skill training, one-on-one mentoring, group projects, individualized goal setting and action plans.

They have helped each other with amazing, insightful case studies. They have worked hard to reach high.”
