SCNM 2006 Alumni Survey

In late summer of 2006 the Alumni Office administered a comprehensive survey to our alumni. We had an overwhelming response rate of 32%. While SCNM has graduated 550 Naturopathic physicians, we have contact information for 425 of you. Out of the 425 physicians/alumni surveyed, 136 (or 32%) responded. And, here is what you told us:

Brief Overview and Highlights

Eighty-nine percent of responding alumni are current working in a clinical practice setting. Eighty percent of alumni indicated they are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with their current career as a naturopathic physician. Nearly 75% indicated they were very pleased with their education at SCNM and 74% stated they would refer future students to the College.

However, some areas of concern include only 34% of respondents are somewhat or very satisfied with their income as naturopathic physicians. Only 35% of respondents answered ‘somewhat or very much prepared’ to the question, how well did SCNM education prepare you for the business and practice-building aspect of your profession.

When comparing these results with previously administered surveys the following results were generated:

  • 74% of respondents indicated “definitely yes” and “probably yes” to the question, “Would you recommend the ND program at SCNM to a friend?” This is in comparison to 73% in 2001.
  • 80% of respondents indicated they were “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” to the question, “How satisfied are you with your career as a naturopathic physician?” This is in comparison to 77% in 2001 and 84% in 2003.
  • 67% of respondents indicated they were “very positive” or “positive” to the question, “What impact did your SCNM program completion have on your employment situation?” This is in comparison to 78% in 2001.
  • 39% of respondents indicated they were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” to the question, “Rate your satisfaction with the clinical training aspect of your SCNM education.” This is in comparison to 54% in 2001.
  • 75% of respondents indicated “very high quality” or “good quality” to the question, “Rate the quality of education and instruction in the Basic Sciences at SCNM.” This is in comparison to 87% in 2001.
  • 87% of respondents indicated “yes” to the question, “Do you believe you are effectively applying naturopathic principles in your practice?” This is in comparison to 94% in 2001.

The Alumni Survey, and its results, is an important component of the College’s Institutional Assessment Plan. The survey focuses on the perceptions of alumni about the efficacy of their educational experience at SCNM and in their naturopathic medical degree program, as well as facts about their employment or career satisfaction. The institution can understand how alumni satisfaction grows or diminishes over time. Results of this survey will be helpful in the process of program reviews and curricular revision. Results were delivered to the Executive Committee, which include the President, Chief Medical Officer and Provost/Executive VP of Academics.
