What an exciting morning! More than 100 attendees joined us for our Groundbreaking Ceremony, including Mayor of Tempe, Mark Mitchell, KTAR-92.3, Natural Partners, Natural Awakenings and several other publications and sponsors.
We began the ceremony on the third floor of the Administrative Building, where Dr. Paul Mittman, ND, EdD, President/CEO of SCNM, gave a warm welcome to everyone in the crowd. "It has been 20 years in the making. This is a historic moment for SCNM and we believe that this is a wonderful time for our community in Tempe and around Arizona and beyond. The building we are about to break ground on is going to not only serve the SCNM community, our students and our patients and people who work here, but is [going to be] a portal and opening to the public to learn and to eat healthy food, to learn about healthy cooking and to learn about the ways we can use lifestyle changes to prevent illness and to reverse disease. This is a dream that many of us have dreamed about for a long time."
Mayor Mark Mitchell, City of Tempe, also shared his thoughts on the expansion. "The City of Tempe has been very proud of being the home of SCNM since 1996. The expansion of SCNM is more than simply an addition of a physical building. This expansion is going to increase their ability to serve patients and the public, as well as educating students. They are striving to meet today's health challenges head-on. And for that, they should be commended. We at the city of Tempe are very, very happy that you are expanding in our community."
David Schwalm, Phd, Chairman of the Board for SCNM, observed, "Today marks the coming of age for SCNM. This new building addresses the gap between what the college is now and where it needs to be in order to meet the [new healthcare] challenges. It is transformative; it is a really big deal."
Dr. Mittman thanked SCNM's Board of Trustees, SCNM's Executive Council and all those involved in making the Campus Expansion possible. Pictured above, the Executive Council has been meeting every week for the last two years discussing and planning the new building.
Everyone migrated down to the construction site, where our construction crews had positioned ten shovels in the ground. Let's dig some dirt! Dr. Mittman led the team of "new construction crew members" in the ceremonial first digs.
We would like to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, all of the attendees, the Board of Trustees, the Executive Council, donors, sponsors and everyone who has made this SCNM Campus Expansion possible.
"I am very excited for our school expansion...now we will have more patient interactions and more advanced classrooms to help us learn in a brand new way. This building is not only a big step for naturopathic medicine but for medicine in general."
- Alissia Zenhausern, 1st year SCNM student
"Naturopathic medicine changed my life by giving me hope and a return to health. I can't wait for the clinic expansion and new courses! With SCNM's growth, there will be more NDs helping more people like me, who thought they just had to adjust to a life of pain and poor health."
- Lara, SCNM Medical Center patient
