NWB Rocky Point Trip
We have just gotten back from Rocky Point, Mexico with Naturopaths Without Borders (NWB). It was a truly amazing experience to help these people in need who don't have access to health care. The students go about once a month and need doctors to supervise primaries or see patients themselves. This trip had several clinical secondaries, yet didn't have any clinical primaries, so the doctors saw patients all day.
In total among 4 doctors we were able to help 41 patients in need. I saw 13 patients including many severely diabetic patients with random blood sugars over 500, severe peripheral neuropathies, and other sequellae of untreated chronic illness. We offered lots of nutritional advice, naturopathic supplementation, conventional medications when indicated and available, and appropriate referrals as needed.
My laptop came in handy to use Radar homeoapthic software by Archibel to prescribe lots of homeopathic remedies for a variety of concerns ranging from shoulder pain, back pain, knee pain, tooth pain, chronic depression, diabetic neuropathy pains, facial paralysis, prostatitis, etc. We also used some physical medicine and acupuncture in some back pain cases.
The next trip is April 16, 2011 and I think I'll be going again because it was such a great experience. The students need doctors to supervise and don't have any signed up for that trip yet. Because it's a nice time of year we may stay until Sunday the 17th to relax a bit on the beach in Mexico.
SCNM students who want to come are more than welcome, it would be so much fun and an incredibly rewarding experience! If any of you are interested in going on one of these trips in the future please contact Ana Jones, trip coordinator at
