'Tis the Season!
By: Salina Bazurto, MBA
The holiday season is upon us and it definitely shows at Southwest College. Just walk through the front doors of SCNM to feel the joy of the holiday season and the warmth of the student body, staff and faculty. Our entrance is decorated with holiday wreaths, lights, a menorah and a lighted Christmas tree. To celebrate the season, the Student Government Association (SGA) sponsored SCNM’s 1st Annual Holiday ChrismaHanukKwansaFestivis Celebration. The celebration was held on December 8th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm in the SCNM garden. Students, staff, faculty and alumni attended along with their significant others and children in the brisk 60 degree evening.
The 1st Annual Holiday ChrismaHanukKwansaFestivis Celebration was a huge success and one to be remembered. Guests enjoyed a variety of music, sticking themselves to a Velcro wall and putting on a sumo suit to take on competitors in a sumo wrestling match. It’s not a party unless there is food and of course beverages which were provided by SGA and students. Guests noshed on pizza and a variety of snacks, washing it all down with a frosty beverage from the keg or a specialty margarita known at SCNM as the “Dave-arita.”
The highlight of the evening was the highly-anticipated sumo wrestling match, which began days prior with a challenge from Garrett Wdowin, SGA President, to select SCNM faculty and staff. Dr. Robert Waters, basic science faculty, graciously accepted the challenge with the rebuttle, “There had better be two or more of you at once, or I might as well arm wrestle a Tsetse fly for mugs of lemonade!“

A crowd of about 50 onlookers gathered for the “Main Event” with Dr. Waters taking on Dr. Schuyler McHenry, Resident, and Garrett Wdowin. To intimidate his opponents, Dr. Waters began with a display of push ups outside the ring. A chant of “Waters” filled the garden and the match lasted approximately three rounds. The event will go down in SCNM history!
Southwest College is a unique place to be, whether a member of the staff, faculty, or student body. SCNM is a place of family and friends. Events like the Holiday ChrismaHanukKwansaFestivis Celebration is just one way everyone comes together to relax, laugh and enjoy the company of friends.
Happy Holidays!
