SCNM Presented with
a Labyrinth!

By Kristina Hopkins

Through the generosity and hard work of the SGA, SCNM now has its own labyrinth. SGA President Garrett Wdowin officially announced its opening Wednesday, Oct. 4 and students have already begun to take advantage of this awesome addition to the campus. The space adjacent to the Annex that was once a bare lot now has a hand-crafted labyrinth, as well as five benches and nine flowering vines and bushes to make the space an inviting haven. Everyone on campus is invited to take head over to the Annex, walk through and enjoy.

This SGA gift had been in the works for more than a year, ever since Garrett and his sister, Heather, had the idea while strolling around campus. The plan to build the labyrinth was included in Garrett's plans when he ran for SGA office, and now he is fulfilling his campaign promise. With help from his mother, Facilities Director George Richards and a few other helping hands, Garrett designed and built the labyrinth.

Switchbacks run along the outer half of the design, while the path of the inner half is two interlacing spirals. There is only one entrance, but a short distance along the path a foot-shaped rock marks the place where the paths diverge. Garrett designed the labyrinth to offer a different experience on the walk to the center and on the way back out. The entire labyrinth follows a flow of water beneath the ground thanks to SGA Treasurer Carol Spooner and her skills with a dowsing rod.

Labyrinths have been employed for centuries as a way to encourage inner peace and balance, as well as insight and celebration. In many Native American cultures it is also known as a medicine wheel or “man in the maze,” and in Celtic lore it is known as the “never ending circle.” Often, the labyrinth is walked as a meditation or spiritual exercise, but as Garrett says, “You can walk through it for any reason at all.”
