Dateline NBC Follows SCNM Autism Research
November 20, 2005
Dateline NBC is following the chelation research study with autistic children, conducted exclusively by the Southwest College
Research Institute at SCNM. While unable to confirm whether a feature will air in the future, we are able to report that Dateline
has visited our institution twice in the last couple of months to videotape segments for a possible story. The news organization
has talked extensively with Principal Investigator on the project, Dr. Matthew Baral. In addition to their conversations,
Dateline has interviewed Dr. James Adams, an adjunct faculty member at SCNM. Video crews from the organization have taped
at both the main campus and the Medical Center.
With autism spectrum disorders affecting about 1 in 166 children in the United States, national researchers are scurrying
to discover causes and treatments. The effects of heavy metals on autism are currently unknown. SCNM's study is entitled "DMSA
Treatment of Children with Autism and Heavy Metal Toxicity." If you are a parent with an autistic child and you live in Arizona
and would like to be considered for this study, you can visit our Southwest College Research web
resource.
