New Contraceptive Method Offered at SCNM Medical Center
March 26, 2006
Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center is now offering a new contraceptive method, the FemCap. Approved by the FDA in 2003, the FemCap is a non-latex, non-hormonal, non-allergenic silicone rubber cap that fits over the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. It is estimated that the FemCap may achieve up to 96-98% success in preventing pregnancy if used correctly.
The FemCap can be worn up to 48 hours. It comes in 3 sizes based on the obstetrical history of the woman and is available only by prescription. It is inexpensive and reusable for one year. Dr. Jennifer Nevels, Interim Chair Women’s Integrative Medicine Department at SCNM said “There is no interference with the menstrual cycle and no effect on fertility. There is instant reversibility when pregnancy is desired, unlike other contraceptive methods.”
You must have 3 consecutive normal pap smears to be prescribed the FemCap or any other barrier method.
