As we enter into 2008, Southwest College reflects on the rigors and accomplishments of 2007.
January 2007
- SCNM received $200,000 in gifts from Warren Adelson and an anonymous donor to physically remodel the Hamilton Elementary School Clinic.
- SCNM received $20,000 from the Charles M. Baurevic Foundation for a specialized homeopathy training course and new IT servers to help improve technology for students.
- Dr. Joni Olehausen was introduced as the new Dean of Clinical Education.
- Dr. Heidi Weinhold, 2000 SCNM alumna, traveled to Nigeria with the World Health Mission to establish diabetes screening clinics and screened nearly 2,000 patients.
February 2007
- SCNM received a $24,000 grant from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust for new diagnostic equipment at the Hamilton Elementary School Clinic.
March 2007
- SCNM student, Diana Heath, raced across the Sahara Desert in “the toughest race in the world” the Marathon des Sables.
- SCNM's residency program became certified by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME) and was approved as a certified sponsor of residency programs.
- SCNM created two new distance site residencies at the Alaska Center for Natural Medicine in Fairbanks , Alaska and Centro de Salud Familiar in Phoenix , Ariz.
April 2007
- The Sage Foundation for Health's Annual Red Ball rose over $500,000 to be dispersed over the next five years to SCNM's off-site clinics that treat medically underserved and unserved populations.
- Dr. Stephen Messer, SCNM faculty member and Department of Homeopathy Chair, was the recipient of the Henry N. Williams Professional Service Award by the National Center of Homeopathy
- SCNM students established the Naturopathic Medical Student Association (NMSA) which has become the first incorporated independent association of Naturopathic physicians-in-training in North America .
May 2007
- The Naturopathic Public Awareness Campaign (NPAC) hosted their 4 th annual Gala
June 2007
- SCNM introduced new podcast series on Apple iTunes “Health Experts Health Secrets”
July 2007
- The SCNM Career Center announced the summer graduating class as the first class to reach a pre-graduation placement of 75%.
- SCNM graduates, Heather Paulson and Jenna Blasi, attained top hospital based residencies at Goshen Hospital in Goshen , Ind. and Griffin Hospital in Derby , Conn.
August 2007
- Stephanie Mehrtens was welcomed as new Dean of Students
- SCNM said goodbye to their mentor, colleague, co-worker and friend, Dr. Thomas Richards, Dean of Biomedical Sciences
- Dr. Paul Mittman, President/CEO, was awarded Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP).
Sept. 2007
- The newly renovated Hamilton Elementary School Clinic was unveiled with five-private exam rooms, new medical equipment, new furnishings, a waiting room, private clinician teaching room, medicinary, reference library, computers and telephone, and brightly painted murals.
- SCNM began a Pediatric Fellowship under Dr. Matthew Baral.
- Dr. Eric Udell, SCNM 2002 alumni and adjunct faculty, was invited to teach homeopathy at the Homeopathy School of the Americas in Guatemala City .
- SCNM joined the AZ Department of Peace for the 1 st Annual PeaceLinks Summit held at Hamilton Elementary to bring peace to neighborhoods of the Murphy School District through health and education
November 2007
- SCNM Residency Program grew to support five residents at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center .
December 2007
- SCNM's Research Department was restructured and introduced Dr. Robert Waters, Research Chair and Dr. Jeffrey Langland, Research Vice-Chair.
- SCNM introduced new virtual view book with interactive tour.
- The Dr. Thomas Richards' Doctoré Development Center (DDC) for tutoring was introduced.
- SCNM students, faculty and staff held a holiday party for the children at Hamilton Elementary School complete with presents, treats and Santa.
Other accomplishments in 2007 include:
- Faculty members participated in the Learning Enhancement and Resource
Network (LEARN) program to incorporate innovative teaching methodologies to better understand how students learn.
- The conceptual design for the new Center for Health and the Environment is underway to be co-located to provide seamless care for a wide spectrum of patients.
- Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center introduced men's and women's wellness clinics.
- SCNM student scores continue to rise on NPLEX examinations.
- The Admissions office received a record number of inquiries, 7,496.
- SCNM welcomed their most diverse and multicultural classes, with 32% of incoming students in 2007 reporting an ethnic background.

- The Dr. Thomas Richards' Doctoré Development Center (DDC) has begun assisting students.
- The admissions office is geared to break enrollment records.
- Foresee breaking ground for the new Center for Health and the Environment on the SCNM campus.
- Continue to improve shared governance and operations, explore new teaching methodologies and increase student success and retention rates.
