Listen to the Doctor
By Kristina Hopkins
For the past nine months, “The Doctor is In” lecture series has been presented on the last Wednesday of each month from 7-9 p.m. at the SCNM Main Campus, and the feedback has been extremely positive. These lectures provide Naturopathic doctors (NDs) with a platform to speak about the natural and alternative therapies in which they focus, as well as current and hot-button issues. The case-based talks also include time for questions and answers, giving the audience the chance to ask general and personal health questions.3
Distinguished physicians have covered a wide range of topics and given their audiences the opportunity to learn about the numerous naturopathic applications for acute and chronic health conditions. In February, renowned nutrition authority Dr. Mona Morstein, Chair of Nutrition at SCNM, spoke about menopause. In March, Dr. Laryn Callaway, SCNM alumna and founder and CEO of Callaway Consumer Products, spoke on anxiety and depression. Dr. Robert Gear, who was largely responsible for the licensure of NDs in Arizona, spoke about spinal health in July and on Sept. 27, Dr. Ravi Chandiramani, Medical Director for The Journey Healing Centers, will present on chemical dependancy recovery. October holds an exciting lecture with Dr. Patricia Gaines, SCNM’s Chair of Botanical Medicine, when she will speak on hypertension and high cholesterol.
“The Doctor Is In” series will continue through 2007 with a host of new, fascinating topics and is sponsored through SCNM and the Arizona Naturopathic Medical Association (AzNMA). SCNM, an accredited higher learning institution with teachings that draw from a rich history of natural, nontoxic therapies in combination with a strong foundation of biomedical sciences, greatly enjoys working with the AzNMA, an organization committed to naturopathy through public education and legislative lobbying in Arizona. AzNMA Executive Director Deborah Mainville-Knight has been active in this partnership and the success of the lecture series and occasionally attends the lectures herself.
“The Doctor is In” is just one way the naturopathic community is working towards exposing the benefits of naturopathic medicine. Please email marketing@scnm.edu to join “The Doctor is In” mailing list and become a part of this educational experience.
