In June, SCNM received its largest financial gift to date when Herb and Lani Alpert contributed a $1 million
matching donation to our campaign to create a new medical facility centered around Environmental Medicine. The new building
will replace the SCNM Annex and will focus on education, research and patient-centered care, allowing our College to further
the work to which we have been committed through our Environmental Medicine Center for Excellence.
Until recently, there were no institutions that integrated environmental medicine into medical education, while conducting
research and treating patients with chronic diseases linked to environmental factors. In August 2002, researchers, physicians
and public health experts came together to create the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Environmental Medicine Center
of Excellence.
Currently, the Center of Excellence fosters cutting edge research and clinical training, but it must physically expand to
effectively serve the treatment of patients and education of physicians. Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine's goal
is to build a "healing center" in which the study and application of Environmental Medicine can reach its full potential.
The facility SCNM intends to build will feature an eco-effective design, combining the most extensive hydrotherapy facility
in North America with state-of-the-art Naturopathic modalities.
The Alperts learned of our capital campaign during a presentation on Environmental Medicine on June 11 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Dr. Walter Crinnion, SCNM Environmental Medicine advisory board member Dr. Soram Singh Khalsa, and Dr. Paul Mittman spoke
to an audience of nearly 70 about the advances in research and treatment that are currently being made by our College through
Environmental Medicine.
Thanks to this extraordinarily generous gift from the Alperts, the College is well on its way to making the new facility a
reality. As a matching donation, their gift will provide an incentive for others who give to the building campaign to know
that whatever their gift may be, it is matched dollar for dollar up to $1 million. The Alperts also agreed to join us on special
occasions as we move forward to share the message of Naturopathic and Environmental Medicine.
Many of you may know Herb Alpert and his wife, singer Lani Hall. A recording artist for 5 decades, Mr. Alpert has 14 Platinum
albums, co- founded the A & M record company and, among his many awards has won 7 Grammy Awards and a Tony Award for producing
"Angels in America." You should also know that the couple takes a special interest in supporting educational and
artistic opportunities through The Herb Alpert Foundation.
The gift from the Alperts reinforces the public success that SCNM has been establishing over the years. As a community it
is cause to celebrate, not only the benevolence of the Alperts, but the growth and expansion of our College.
Immediately following the Alpert's donation, Terre Thomas (daughter of the late comedian and actor Danny Thomas), actress
Victoria Principal, chairman of SCNM's Board of Trustees, Dr. Klee Bethel, and College founders Drs. Michael and Kyle Cronin
all committed to significant and generous donations. Many others have started to give as well. If you are interested in helping
us create the dream of the new facility, please contact Susan Kavanaugh at 480-222-9229 or e-mail s.kavanaugh@scnm.edu. |
