Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine’s Research Department is collaborating with Arizona State University/Biodesign Institute, Translational Genomics Research Institute, and the University of Arizona. In late 2007, the Research Department at SCNM was restructured to include the following faculty.
Research Faculty
*Robert F. Waters, Ph.D., Chair (biochemistry, genetics, statistical mathematics),
*Jeffrey Langland, Ph.D, Research Vice-Chair (virology, immunology, vaccinology, microbiology),
Arben Lasku, M.D., Ph.D.(pathology, biochemistry, genetics),
Yvan Rochon, Ph.D. (adjunct research faculty-biochemistry, herbal medicine)
Katherine Raymer, M.D., NMD (clinical research, psychiatry),
Debra Wollner, Ph.D.(IRB, pharmacology, physiology),
Pamela Martin, M.D. (pediatrics),
Prof. Jo Ann Sanchez (master herbalist),
Steve Woffinden, EE. (Retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel, Adjunct Research Scientist, artificial intelligence mathematics, General Dynamics-Tempe, AZ.),
Dave Calvert (Adjunct Research Scientist, Master Herbalist),
Tera Crisalida, P.A. (Adjunct Research Scientist-certified clinical trial specialist),
Lisa Hilli, ND. (Clinical Research Specialist),
In addition to collaborative research with ASU/BDI, SCNM is involved in joint research efforts with Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGEN) (www.tgen.org) in Phoenix, Ariz. and soon with the University of Arizona in Tucson, (Leslie Gunatilaka, Ph.D.) (www.arizona.edu).
Clinical research at SCNM is continuing with three new clinical projects in the queue.
Completed Projects since December 2007
- Benchtop genetic expression analysis of four anti-viral botanicals has been completed showing extremely positive results. At least two publications shall be forthcoming, plus one or more major grant proposals by June and October 2008.
- Viral growth curve study has been completed with excellent positive results. These data are supportive of item A above. Publications shall be submitted with this information as well.
- Preliminary anti-pox “substance” research that is under funding review by the Department of Defense (DOD) and Homeland Security.
Current Projects
- Survey of practicing naturopathic physicians and manipulation techniques. PI: Nick Buratovich, ND. Project period 2006-8. (Waters, et. al.)
- Genetic expression analysis (metabolism) of microarray data to be used for grant(s) and publications. (ASU/SCNM/TGEN/U of A)
- Continuation of antiviral research using Real Time PCR, Expression Analysis, Extraction/fractionation biochemistry, ex-vivo human tissue response (PBMC, HeLa, human kidney cells, etc.) (ASU/SCNM/TGEN/U of A)
*Drs. Waters and Langland are also directly affiliated with the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University (www.biodesign.asu.edu). (Dr. Langland-ASU Faculty, Dr. Waters-Adjunct Research Faculty) |
