| SCNM graduates, Heather Paulsen, Summer 2007, and Jenna Blasi, Winter 2007, have been selected to fill two of four distance site hospital-based residencies in the United States. There are only four residency opportunities of this nature in the country for ND graduates. It is very exciting that two of the four highly competitive residencies are filled by SCNM graduates!
Heather Paulsen will be a first year resident working at Goshen Hospital in Goshen, Ind. which primarily treats oncology patients. At Goshen, specialized inpatient care is provided in the intensive and progressive care units. Cardiology Services at Goshen General Hospital features two cardiac cath labs and three levels of Cardiac Rehabilitation to help regain heart health. With the new expansion that Goshen Hospital recently underwent, Heather will be amidst the finest of patient services and care, and part of Goshen’s continued commitment to provide the community with the very best healthcare available.
Jenna Blasi accepted a first year residency with the Integrative Medical Residency Program which is affiliated with Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn. and the University Of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine.
At the Integrative Medicine Center (IMC), which is affiliated with Yale Preventative Research Center (PRC) at Griffin Hospital, Jenna will be working closely with conventional practitioners (MDs or a nurse practitioner) and a supervising ND to come up with appropriate diagnoses and treatment plans for patients. To increase patient exposures and to familiarize with conventional assessments and treatments, she will also have clinical rotations in different departments at Griffin Hospital and its affiliated clinics. This includes working at the IMC for three 4-hour shifts per week and initiate and maintain clinical rotations in the departments of choice at Griffin Hospital and its affiliated clinic for approximately two 5-hour shifts per week. This does not include the other required resident duties which will easily make for a 40+ hour work week.
In March 2007, the residency program at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine became certified by the CNME. This certification not only grows the SCNM Residency Program with our Naturopathic medical clinic but it allows SCNM to have approved residency distance sites. To date, SCNM has approved two distance-site residencies for the Fall 2007; one in the Phoenix area and one in Alaska. There are three more sites that are currently being considered for future placement.
In January 2007, Dr. Christine Sorensen became Director of the residency program for SCNM. The SCNM Residency Program at our medical clinic currently supports five residents with the possibility of obtaining a second-year resident in 2008.
