Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences helps shape the future of healthcare by training a new generation of physicians who combine the best of Western biomedicine with patient-centered, evidence-based alternative therapies. At SCNM patients receive care grounded in scientific principles, evaluated through research and tailored to meet their individual needs. We get to the root of patients’ problems by taking time to conduct a thorough history and physical exam that pays particular attention to contributing physical, mental, emotional and environmental factors. Doctors and patients work together to design treatment plans that blend conventional treatments with therapeutic life changes (diet, exercise and stress reduction) and therapies that support the body’s intrinsic capacity to restore health (e.g., acupuncture, mind-body medicine, clinical nutrition).
An academic medical center must also serve our students’ educational needs. We clustered the exam rooms around six student classrooms and anchored by a student resource center. The classrooms and resource center will give students space to discuss patients’ cases with residents and attending physicians and a wide array of printed and electronic medical reference materials to help guide their clinical decisions and enhance their learning.
The Medical Center will open with an electronic medical record (EMR) system designed specifically for naturopathic practice. Incorporating EMR is an important step for three reasons. First, it will improve patient care by enhancing record-keeping and access to patient information. Second, it will train Southwest College students in an emerging technology that will soon be the healthcare standard. Third, the EMR system will give the College the means to conduct outcome research and evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of naturopathic medicine.
To create the new SCNM Medical Center, Our architects employed evidenced based principles to create an environment promoting a sense of serenity, wellness and comfort. Click Here for Floor Plan. The physical environment sets the stage to transform a routine office visit into a sacred exploration that sparks the journey from illness to wellness. Light streaming in through corridors and examination rooms, windows opening up to desert landscaping and medicinal gardens, imbue the setting with the healing power of nature, the force that animates every living being.
The walls are going up! Today the metal studs are in place. Plasterboard is also staged and ready to begin enclosing spaces once the electrical lines are in place.
Environmental Fact: 22 tons of material has been deferred from landfill and 2 bins of steel has been recycled during construction.
