Sojourner Center Presents SCNM with Hope Honors Award
Since 2006 the Hope Honors have been part of Sojourner Center’s observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October. They are awarded to individuals and organizations who have actively and continually supported Sojourner Center’s mission to overcome the effects of domestic violence, one life at a time.
On October 6, 2011, SCNM’s Dr. Mittman and Dr. Girard were presented the Hope Honors Award designating October, 20, 2011 as Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Day.
Through a partnership between the Sojourner Center and SCNM, SCNM offers an extended-site health clinic at the Sojourner Center where SCNM student clinicians, under the supervision of an SCNM faculty member, see patients for a variety of conditions ranging from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse to acute and chronic conditions, including diabetes, asthma, ear infections, and the common cold. These treatment services include homeopathy, acupuncture, nutritional counseling and supplementation, and botanical medicine.
Hope honorees can be donors and/or volunteer corps Vanguards, and can be individuals, companies/organizations or a combination of both. Their involvement with Sojourner Center must exceed 5 years, during which time they have engaged in activities, projects, or programs that further the mission of Sojourner Center and/or domestic violence awareness efforts in the community.
Honorees are chosen by development and Vanguard team members with final approval given by Executive Director Connie Phillips, Development Director Colleen Pyra, and Director of Major Gifts Gordon Sims. Each honoree is given an October day which is named for them in recognition of their contributions. During October, each honoree receives a personal thank you note from the executive director on their designated day. Also on that day, the two Sojourner Center campuses and the Fillmore Commons Resource Center display placards saluting the honoree.
