Promotions Mercedes Davila
Mercedes Davila was promoted to the position of
Assistant Registrar at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.
She started here
as Registrar’s Office Coordinator in May, 2005. Before
joining SCNM, Mercedes worked for eight years for El Paso Independent
School District. She held different positions including
Registrar for both Middle School and High School.
Carol Kamen
Carol Kamen
was promoted to Assistant Director of Admissions at Southwest College
of Naturopathic Medicine. Carol joined
the Southwest
College Admissions team last year, bringing with her more than
15 years of marketing and sales experience. She has worked
for both Cleveland State University and Arizona State University
and is finishing work on a Masters of Applied Communication.
Dr.
Jennifer Nevels
Dr. Jennifer Nevels was named Interim Chair of the Women’s
Integrated Medicine department for a term running from February ’06
to February ’07. Dr. Jennifer Nevels is an SCNM grad. After
completing SCNM’s residency program, Dr. Nevels has been
serving as a supervising physician at the Medical Center where
she implements individualized treatments using botanicals, acupuncture,
nutrition and lifestyle counseling. Dr. Nevels also works at Las
Fuentes (one of our extended sites). Her effort to educate the
public about Naturopathic Medicine has extended to radio and magazine
publishing.
Dr. Christine Sorensen
As of January 1, Dr. Christine Sorensen
became the Medical Center's first full-time Faculty member! During the spring quarter,
she will supervise six student rotations (phew!) Dr. Sorensen
graduated from SCNM in 2001 and completed a Residency in Family
Practice at the Medical Center. She has been an Adjunct Faculty
member ever since, supervising clinical rotations and teaching
Minor Surgery and IV classes at the college. Dr. Sorensen
brings to us her expertise in these areas as well twenty-five years
of experience as an RN specializing in Labor and Delivery. Please
welcome her to our team as a full-time addition!
New Position
The Medical Center has filled the new position of Patient
Services Manager. This position elevates the front desk operations
to a new level of responsibility and accountability that has not
existed previously. Previously the Business Manager also
oversaw the patient services desk which created significant competing
priorities. Laurel Spence accepted the job as Patient Services Manager. Laurel
has considerable office management experience and direct hands-on
patient services experience supporting a busy family practice and
dermatology office. She is extremely enthusiastic about naturopathic
medicine—even developed her own website to direct people
to naturopathic care. Laurel has also been a patient at the
center and can’t wait to be on the other side of the desk
providing services and meeting patient and internal staff, physician
and student needs. Stop by and say hi to her when you have
a chance.

Keeping Busy
Dr. Robert Waters was asked and accepted membership into the American College
of Medical Genetics (ACMG). This group has to have at least 51% MDs and 51%
of those have to be current members of the AMA. Dr. Waters indicated, “The
contact at the ACMG indicated that I will be the first to come
from any alternative medical environment (as far as she knew). Maybe I will
find out how Custer felt in his last day?” As a result of the membership,
Dr. Waters added course material to his website, www.scnmedline.com, from
Charles Dreiling, PhD, from the Biochemistry Department, University of Nevada
School of Medicine. Be sure to visit Dr. Waters website sometime (It’s
sponsored by The Awareness Corporation).
Dr. Matthew Baral was invited to serve on the "Pediatric
Integrative Medicine Leadership Initiative," a steering committee
for the Pediatric Integrative Medicine Conference. The PIMC is
the product of collaboration between pediatric integrative medicine
programs and centers across the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Baral is
the first naturopathic physician to join the steering committee.
Dr. Baral, a Bastyr graduate, came to us four years ago and has
received national acclaim for his work in pediatrics including
his current guidance of a research study on the effects of chelation
in autistic children. He is also in charge of our highly successful
clinic at Hamilton Elementary in the Murphy School District.
Dr. Leslie Axelrod, Dr. Mona Morstein, Dr. Nick Buratovich, new
resident Dr. Jessica Tran and SCNM student Betsy Yergel spent
Jan. 28 studying Cold Laser Therapy at Olympian Labs. The seminar
featured SCNM alum Dr. Donese Worden and Dr. William Tiller (better
known from the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know?”).
Nine CME credits were offered. The seminar will be held again
on February 28. Call 480-483-2302, ext. 157 for more information.
