Financial Aid
The Financial Aid Office assists students in financing their professional education.
Approximately 85% of Southwest College students receive some type of financial
aid (Federal loans and alternative loans). Financial resources are limited to
the Subsidized Stafford Loan, Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, and Alternative Loans
for eligible students. Canadian students may apply for a Canadian Student Loan
through the British Columbia Ministry of Education.
The Federal Stafford Educational Loan is available to U.S. citizens and eligible
non-residents. Students who qualify can borrow on the Stafford subsidized loan
(government pays the interest while in school) and Stafford unsubsidized loan
(interest accrues) up to a maximum of $18,500 per academic year (three quarters).
Awarding of subsidized and unsubsidized loans is based on information submitted
to the Department of Education through the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) process. Foreign students applying for alternative loans must have
a co-borrower who is a creditworthy US citizen or permanent resident. Foreign
students applying for alternative loans must have a creditworthy U.S. citizen
or permanent resident co-borrower.
