Library
Southwest College Library supports the curriculum, enhances the College learning environment, and helps to complete the larger institutional mission of medical education, patient care, and research, with emphasis on the natural therapies. The Library provides the campus community with books, journals, and other information resources, teaches bibliographic and other research skills, and provides the larger community with a major information resource.
Library Collection, Holdings
The Library's cataloged collections at present include more than 13,000 items, which include about 1,500 additional volumes and extra copies, with about 3,000 Audio Shelf items and 500 videos. Our catalog is Internet-accessible, and may be accessed freely by anyone away from campus. The audiocassette collection serves as an especially good source for either acquiring or maintaining professional medical currency because it contains many recent recordings of professional conferences, seminars, and workshops.. The Library's journal collection includes 220 titles, of which it currently subscribes to, or has significant back-issue holdings for, one hundrede journals. The Library's holdings support the curriculum and include materials on the basic and pre-clinical sciences, the more accepted natural therapies such as clinical nutrition and diet therapy, mind/body medicine, ethnic and folk medical systems, and, in fact, all of the various, different kinds of alternative medical therapies that there are. The collection has special strengths in herbalism, homeopathy, and traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture. Among its special collections is the environmental medicine collection of Dr. Theron G. Randolph, Father of Clinical Ecology, totalling 888 volumes. Dr. Randolph donated his personal book collection, and the manuscripts went to Harvard University. The books may be searched separately in our catalog. Although still of modest size (while expanding rapidly), SCNM Library is the best intellectual resource of its kind in the Southwest. The Library normally increases the size of its cataloged collection by about 100 items per month.
Library Resources
The Library's online
catalog can also be accessed, of course, from any of the numerous high-speed Internet-access computer workstations at SCNM Library itself or at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center. All cataloging is done on-site and is customized to fit the unique needs of our collection and the special needs of our clientele. All or most of these workstations come with such journal indexing services as Alt-Health Watch, AMED, and PubMed. Other programs include MD-Consult, First Consult, The Natural Standard, Natural Medical Protocols, RADAR, and EndNote. They also have the programs of the current version of MS Office and the most current version of the Library's own customized set of 1,500+ Internet Explorer Favorites especially designed to help all our researchers with their very special medical interests get started finding the best websites for those subjects. For example, these "I.E. Favorites" include access to hundreds of medical journal websites with some full-text retrieval capabilities. Additionally, all students and faculty have free direct access to the 500+ medical journal titles in hard copy and other scientific research resources located at nearby A.S.U.'s Noble Science Library.
Library Public Access
Adults from the general public are welcome to use the Library's resources on-site free of charge. Such users who are also interested in obtaining check-out privileges may buy a community borrower's card for $20 per year.
