Undergraduate: Bachelor's degree in kinesiology from California State University, Fullerton
I was close to graduating from college, so I started looking for post-grad nutrition programs. I was considering a master’s in nutrition, but I wanted more. I wanted to learn how food impacts the body and how to prevent disease, instead of waiting until a person is sick to treat them. I wanted to do more for people.
My friend told me about naturopathic medicine so I starting doing my own research. I just thought to myself, that’s what I want to do!
I attended an informational talk held by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC) in Long Beach, and soon after, applied to SCNM. I just loved how sunny Arizona was compared to the other naturopathic medical schools. It’s just so bright when you walk on-campus and it makes you happy. It’s a life-saver amidst all the crazy studying – I can always just go outside and spend some time in the sun.
My favorite part of the curriculum has been the hands-on experience, especially with acupuncture. It’s cool that we get to do everything in clinic since we’re in a licensed state. The doctors that supervise us in clinical training are really great to work with. School has been very challenging in so many ways, but I feel like I’ve grown a lot.
I also really love going on Naturopaths Without Borders trips to Mexico and Haiti. It’s a great opportunity to get clinical experience out in the field as early as your first year. Being able to see patients in these communities reaffirms, this is what I’m working towards.
When you get to your third year, the labs become very hands-on; it’s not just basic sciences. You are applying what you’ve learned the first two years, and it’s really very exciting to start putting everything together.
I am so excited to graduate and start a career I will love. I’ll be in class and think, this is going to be what I do when I graduate! I get so excited. I’ll be doing something I really love and help a lot of people.
Since the profession is growing, there are so many possibilities! It may sound cliché, but it truly is a career with endless opportunities! When you become a naturopathic physician, there is no limit to what you can do.
