Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences has a rich history of sending naturopathic physicians and nutritionists into the world with not just a knowledge of naturopathic medicine and nutrition but a rich experience in its healing effects. We train and prepare graduates for the future of medicine and health care. Since day one, we have been an innovator in the field of naturopathic medicine and nutrition, and we strive to advance the profession and opportunities for every graduate.
As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to learn in the classroom, clinic environment and online, as well as in student clubs, activities and study groups. At SCNM, we are united in a calling to embrace the natural world, and the supportive community is here to fuel your success.
In addition to the medicine we teach and practice, it’s important to know about our long history in the Valley of the Sun providing education and care for those looking for an integrative approach. From our inception, we’ve blended new ways of learning and teaching with timeless principles of naturopathic and conventional medicine and healthcare.
SCNM was founded in 1993. We quickly outgrew our first home and moved to the current Tempe campus in 1996. The medical center remained in Scottsdale until 2010 when an expansion made it possible to co-locate academic learning with clinical services and training at our Tempe campus. In 2019, SCNM’s Academic Programs added the School of Nutrition and two Master of Science programs: MS Clinical Nutrition and MS Nutrition Business Leadership. Paving the way for the future of higher education, both Masters programs were built to be taught 100% online for a best-of-class learning experience.
Anyone who has visited the campus will tell you that SCNM is much more than a bricks and mortar academic institution… It’s a place where passionate, like-minded students, faculty and staff come together to make a difference in people’s lives. And, that feeling of a deeper commitment is tangible on campus.
Throughout the decades, our student body grew from its inaugural class of 42 to its current size exceeding 400. To this day, we remain committed to our founders’ vision of being a force for change to help transform healthcare. Welcome to Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences.
SCNM is a school of medicine and health sciences grounded in naturopathic principles. Dedicated to the ideal that everyone deserves high-quality healthcare, we engage students in rigorous, innovative academic programs, discover and expand knowledge, and empower individuals and communities to achieve optimal health. Our vision is a world that embraces the healing power of nature.
The leadership of any organization is an essential part of the success matrix. SCNM’s leadership exhibits both strong character as well as the ability to direct efforts for the benefit of our medical and nutrition program students. Ensuring that SCNM’s mission and core values are woven throughout the campus experience, our leaders work tirelessly for our students’ success.
I’m Dr. Paul Mittman, President/CEO of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences.
I have been a naturopathic physician for the past 33 years. I practiced for 25 of those, conducted and published research, taught medical students and promoted the benefits of naturopathic medicine to the public. Working with dedicated and bright faculty and staff, we establish partnerships with healthcare systems, clinics and practitioners to provide SCNM students outstanding learning experiences and career opportunities. We establish philanthropic relationships with individuals and corporations to create the best campus resources for the benefit of SCNM students and patients – state of the art classrooms, study and library spaces, the integrative Neil Riordan Center for Regenerative Medicine, Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research, laboratories and wellness facilities. We partner with foundations for SCNM physicians and students to provide quality healthcare to underserved communities at six sites in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
I am SCNM. So is each student who starts their career in naturopathic medicine or clinical nutrition. So is every faculty member who imparts the knowledge, research and wisdom to a new generation of physicians. So is every member of the staff whose work creates a safe, creative and innovative environment for learning and healing. So are our 1300+ alumni, who improve the lives of tens of thousands of patients.
We are SCNM. How about you?
